BIOGRAPHY

On May 6th 1960, Doug was born in what was referred to then, as the new wing of the Peel Memorial Hospital.

Doug has continued to call Brampton his home for over fifty three years.

As a graduate from Central Peel Secondary School, Doug continued his education at Humber College where he obtained a diploma in Horticulture. Doug used his knowledge of horticulture as a summer employee for the Credit Valley Conservation Authority and later a full time employee for the City of Brampton, until the mid 1980’s at which time he ventured out into the private sector.

Doug feels he is one of the fortunate ones to have been able to call Brampton his home for not only himself, but also his family. Married to his wife Debbie for thirty years, together they have raised their children Jake and Carly both graduates of Mayfield Secondary School.

As the past chair of the Brampton Clean City Committee, a Council appointed volunteer position; Doug continues a passion for the environment and protecting it. “We have some of the most beautiful parks and naturalized green spaces in the Province and we must work to protect them” states Doug.

Growing up in Brampton provided Doug with many opportunities to be involved and participate in many different activities, such as sports and recreation.  It was through these opportunities Doug became involved as a volunteer, as a President, a referee and as a coach to be certain these would exist for the future generations. His belief is that providing the facilities and access to our recreational programs is very important to health and well being of our youth, but what is equally just as important is providing the opportunity to all. Doug currently sits on the City of Brampton Sports Hall of Fame selection committee.

Doug’s father the late Mayor Ken Whillans and his mother the late Edna Whillans were strong supporters of the Peel Memorial Hospital. This is the main reason Doug got involved and joined the Campaign Cabinet to raise funds for the new Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness. The new hospital site will break ground in the spring of this year on the old Peel Memorial site.

Doug has seen many changes within the City of Brampton and there will be many more, with many more challenges. He believes that if we tap into the diversity of our community and we face these challenges together, we will achieve and maintain a safe and sustainable City.

This will be the core of Brampton’s strength as we move forward.

Doug’s belief is that Municipal Government is the most open, the most accessible level of Government that allows you the stakeholders to voice your concerns and ideas to implement change.

Let’s make that change

TESTIMONIALS

The Davis and Whillans families have long history and a friendship that spans for over 50 years. I have witnessed first-hand Doug’s continued unselfish commitment to Brampton recognizing how we got here and where we are headed. I believe Brampton has a promising future and there is no better person than Doug Whillans to represent our City.

Honourable William ( Bill ) G. Davis, former Premier of Ontario

I am a long-term resident of Brampton and in my volunteer capacities I have dealt with City Hall for a couple of decades.

I am completely impressed by Councillor Whillans. He passionately represents the interests of his constituents while at the same timedoes not lose sight of the interests of the City as a whole.

“Some people will speak to you in their free time; others will free their time to speak to you”I have always found Doug to be a person who will free his time to speak to me.

I find him easily approachable and every time I have communicated with his office, I receive a reply he always follows through.

He supports so much in the community that it is impossible to list them all but I do know he is a strong supporter for both Veterans and current serving members of The Canadian Forces here in Brampton and I know that very well.

Councillor Whillans, above all, stands for transparency and openness in municipal government and for the future of Brampton beyond electoral terms of office.

While the organizations I volunteer for are apolitical and do not endorse candidates, I, as a private citizen and resident of Brampton, certainly can endorse him. I hope he has your endorsement as well

Doug is a contributing member on the Brampton Clean City Committee and is always ready to assist in whatever promotion he can possibly give for that Committee.  I feel he is a "people person" who is not only popular with his peers but to the younger generation as well.  His sense of humour will probably get him through the rough patches and endear him to others.  He is very knowledgable about the Brampton area-particularly his ward-and finds himself caring about the environment and  those residing in his ward.

We first met Doug years ago during his involvement with Brampton Minor Lacrosse.  We became acquaintances and supported each other, when we both became Presidents of our respective clubs and ended up steadfast friends.  He possesses an unselfish commitment to his community dedicating countless volunteer hours on various projects.  He is a hard worker both in his profession (being building contractors, we have used his services many times) and his volunteer work.  A more loyal and trustworthy candidate (and friend) you will not find.  Doug, I wish you all the best in your campaign.

I first met Doug while we were both employees at Brampton Plumbing and Heating Supplies Ltd.  I had recently purchased a new house and had some issues and questions in regards to by-laws and policies.  Doug didn’t have all the answers, but he was able to direct me to the appropriate departments at City hall where I was able to voice my concerns and have the issues resolved.  He is definitely the person that I would like to see represent me on City Council.
